ATV Trails
On the David Thompson Highway (Hwy 11)
The Coliseum Mountain trail
Is a 17km well used trail. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and ATV users enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding area. The trailhead is located at the Coliseum Trail parking lot.
Shunda/Baldy Mountain Lookout Trail
Is best accessed from the Shunda creek Rec. Area. This 6.5km trail is rough and rocky and has limited views along the way. Once at the lookout, you’re provided with panoramic views of Nordegg and the surrounding Front Ranges. Hikers, Bikers and ATV’s all frequent this route.
On the Forestry Trunk Road
Canary Creek Trail
A difficult, 20km biking, hiking, horseback, and ATV route that begins at the Hummingbird Creek Rec. Area off Onion Lake Road. To start, you must ford Onion Creek. From here the route leads through meadows and climbs into the Ram Range. It ends at a junction, where you may continue to either Ram River or along the Hummingbird Creek Trail. Mid-June to mid-October is the best traveling time for the trail.
Ghost Snowmobile Area
This area, found within the Rocky Mountains Forest reserve is accessed off the Forestry Truck Road. 183km of well-groomed trails for all skill levels are available for snowmobiles and ATV’s. The trails can be accessed from the north at the Fallen Timber South Rec. Area, which has winter camping, and at the Ghost Airstrip and South Ghost Rec. Areas
Onion Lake Trail
A 33km biking, hiking, horseback riding and ATV route that begins off the forestry Truck road, north of the Ram Falls Rec. Area. It leads along an old road through the Ram Range to Hummingbird Creek. Waterfalls can be seen along the way. Mid-June to mid-October is the best time to travel the trail.
South Ram River Trail
Is a 54km trail that takes 8-9 hours by bike and gains 345m in elevation. The trail skirts South Ram River and has a few river crossings. This is a challenging as well as a scenic trail for the cyclist, ATV user, horseback rider or hiker. There are numerous campsites along the way for the weary traveler. The best time to travel is mid-July through October. Access is at the Hummingbird Rec. Area on Onion Lake Road.
Waiparous Creek Trail
This trail may be accessed through the Waiparous Valley Road. Backpackers, mountain bikers, motorcyclists and even horseback riders travel this route to the creek gorge. This picturesque 13.5 km one-way journey takes approximately a day for hikers and 5-6 hours for mountain bikers. The elevation gain is 305m. It is possible to extend the trip by connecting to Devil’s Head Meadows and the Johnson Creek Trails. A shorter more popular alternative is to access Margaret Lake, which offers spectacular views of the Ghost River Wilderness Area. This is a 17km return trip. The mid-Summer to early fall is recommended for all of these trails.

Amenities: Drive through stalls with power (30 and 50 amp) and water. Located ½ km off Hwy752. Dump station and honey wagon service, shower (wheelchair accessible), laundry facilities, quad wash station, winter storage, fire pit, firewood ($), picnic tables. Quad, hike, mountain bike, fish and hunt in the area. Store, restaurant, liquor store and gas station 15 minutes away. Three golf courses located in the area. Ram River, Clearwater River and Prairie Creek drainages are all within biking distance.
ATV friendly, drive your ATV throughout the campsite. Family oriented. ATV rentals are available.

ATV access and off loading allowed in campground. Campground is fenced, secured and staffed 24/7. Gate is closed at night but not locked. Kids area available to ride their ATV’s.
