Traffic Bylaw Amendment
Council passed first reading of an amending Traffic Bylaw that would reduce the speed limit in Rocky Mountain House to 40km/h in most areas of Town.
This follows the 2020 and 2024 speed reductions in Creekside and McNutt neighbourhoods, respectively.
Reducing speed limits on residential streets, downtown, and high pedestrian areas makes our streets safer. Slowing down gives people more time to react to the unexpected to prevent crashes, and reduced the severity of collisions that do happen.
Speed is a critical component of roadway safety. In a vehicle-pedestrian collision, the pedestrian has a 70% chance of surviving when struck by a vehicle that is travelling at 40 km/h. At a vehicle speed of 50 km/h, the survival rate drops to 15% and continues to drop as vehicle speeds increase.
Council will consider second and third readings of the bylaw in early May. In the meantime, residents who wish to comment on the initiative should do so in writing to town@trmh.ca.
